Several years ago, I wore the hat of an automotive salesperson at a Ford dealership. One of the things that struck me the most during my time with the brand was the number of people buying an F-150—a vehicle whose capabilities far exceed their actual needs. At the time, it was the only option of its kind, but today, the American automaker has significantly expanded its lineup with the return of the Ranger and the addition of the Maverick. In reality, despite its compact size, this pickup would suit the majority of F-150 owners. As you can probably imagine, it will take much more to dethrone the king of trucks, whose reputation is firmly established. However, if your needs point you toward a pickup and you're not particularly attached to the F-150, there's a strong chance the Maverick can meet all your requirements.
The Ford Maverick has experienced significant growth since its arrival on the market, which has allowed the American manufacturer to expand its range of trims. The small pickup now offers a more complete lineup than ever. The Maverick has adapted well to customer demand in recent years, which is what makes it such an interesting vehicle today, in my opinion.
Lineup and Pricing
For 2026, the Ford Maverick lineup is divided into five trims, starting with the entry-level XL. This version is primarily aimed at businesses, with a starting price of $38,095. The Maverick XLT offers a more complete look and remains reasonably priced at $40,095. Next is the street-performance-inspired Lobo model, starting at $44,395. The more upscale Lariat follows at $49,595. Finally, if you're an off-road enthusiast, you'll be impressed by the capabilities of the Tremor version, despite its starting price of $50,595.
Category and Competition
The Ford Maverick operates almost alone in its segment, but I'm convinced it would remain a dominant player even if every manufacturer tried to carve out a space in the compact pickup category.
Rivals: Honda Ridgeline, Hyundai Santa Cruz
Design and Technology
The Ford Maverick features a very appealing and modern design. It definitely turns heads, especially with its vibrant color palette. It may not be as imposing as the Ranger or the F-150, but there's no doubt it's a pickup from a styling standpoint.
Its interior is simpler, yet still elegant. Build quality is solid, and I have to say I really like its infotainment system. The driving position is comfortable, and the seats are also very supportive. Where the Maverick's size becomes noticeable is mainly in the rear seats, where space feels a bit tight. That said, one of the things I particularly appreciate about this small pickup is that it was designed so that everyday users can customize it using 3D-printed accessories.
Performance
The 2026 Ford Maverick offers two powertrain options, starting with a hybrid system that combines a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with an electric motor for a total output of 191 horsepower. This powertrain is paired with a continuously variable transmission, and front-wheel drive comes standard. All-wheel drive is also available as an option, which wasn't the case in Canada when the model first launched. Thanks to this setup, the hybrid Maverick achieves an average fuel consumption between 6.2 and 6.4 L/100 km depending on the drivetrain.
The truck also offers a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 238 horsepower and 275 lb-ft of torque. This engine is paired with a 7- or 8-speed automatic transmission depending on the version. As for fuel consumption, it ranges between 9.4 and 10.1 L/100 km.
Weak Points
Pricing climbs quickly from one trim to another. The base model mainly exists for business use.
Strengths
It's a functional, practical, and versatile vehicle. It offers plenty of equipment and impressive capabilities across several areas. The hybrid version's fuel efficiency is exceptionally low.
Signature Element
The Ford Maverick is the ideal vehicle for most people who think they need a pickup.
Final Word
Ford is clearly listening to its customers. The Maverick is a model that brand enthusiasts had been waiting for for a long time. The many improvements it has received in recent years have made it one of the most interesting vehicles currently available on the market.
